A healthy reminder for this holiday season: Managing conflict with care

MOBILE, Ala. — The holiday season brings families and friends together — often around shared meals, memories, and laughter. Yet amid the joy, moments of tension and disagreement are also part of human connection. Conflict, like breathing, is inevitable.

Some may have navigated Thanksgiving festivities smoothly, while others may have experienced moments of disagreement or discomfort. Conflict is disruptive, but it’s also a natural part of relationships. People respond differently. Some become argumentative, while others choose to withdraw or avoid conversations altogether.

Healthy relationships require awareness, empathy, and communication. As we enter the remainder of the holiday season, consider these helpful tips for managing conflict in positive ways:

  • Pause before reacting. Take a breath, count to three, and respond calmly rather than impulsively.
  • Listen with empathy. Try to understand the other person’s perspective before formulating a response.
  • Set boundaries. It’s okay to step away or change the subject when conversations become tense.
  • Focus on connection. Remember why you’re together — to celebrate, support, and appreciate one another.
  • Seek balance and self-care. Rest, exercise, and quiet reflection can help keep emotions stable.

In May, the mental well-being platform called CredibleMind became available to Alabama residents. It is being offered thanks to a partnership with the Alabama Department of Public Health, Alabama Department of Mental Health, Jefferson County Department of Health, and Mobile County Health Department.

“Conflict is part of every relationship,” said Dr. Kevin Michaels, Health Officer for Mobile County. “By approaching difficult moments with compassion and patience, we can preserve our emotional well-being and strengthen our community bonds.” The CredibleMind App can be useful.
