Back-to-school events planned by Family Health

MOBILE, Ala. — Family Health, the primary care division of the Mobile County Health Department, is hosting several back-to-school events to help children prepare for the upcoming academic year. As part of these events, patients will be receiving backpacks with school supplies from July 13 to July 24, while supplies last.

Books, Balls, and Blocks

On July 18, Family Health will join Help Me Grow Alabama to sponsor the Books, Balls, and Blocks (BBB) event. This will take place at the Keeler Memorial Building (251 North Bayou Street in Mobile) from 8 a.m. to noon.

This is a free family event for children aged 1 month to 5½ years, consisting of multiple volunteer-led activity stations at which parents engage with their child in developmentally appropriate play while completing the ASQ-3 and ASQ:SE-2 developmental questionnaires. Parents will be provided with questionnaire results that highlight the child’s strengths as well as areas in need of more support. Parents who complete the screenings will have the opportunity to enroll in Help Me Grow to receive ongoing support from a Care Coordinator in their area.

Help Me Grow Alabama is a free resource that connects families with children from birth to age 8 to community and developmental resources regardless of income, insurance, et cetera. When a family enrolls in HMGA, a Care Coordinator will work to connect them with necessary resources in their area.

Other partners in the event include the Alabama Partnership for Children and the Alabama Department of Mental Health. Additional community agencies will also be present to share their services.

Getting Ready

In conjunction with the BBB event, this will be a “Super Saturday” event at Keeler. There will be two pediatric providers to assist with back-to-school needs.

The North Mobile Health Center (940 Coy Smith Highway in Mount Vernon) and Citronelle Health Center (19250 North Mobile Street) will both be hosting back-to-school events. North Mobile’s event will be on Wednesday, July 15, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., while Citronelle’s event will be Thursday, July 16, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Providers at both locations will be offering annual exams and immunizations.
