Bayou La Batre reports Sanitary Sewer Overflow

MOBILE, Ala. — The Utilities Board of the City of Bayou La Batre has reported a Sanitary Sewer Overflow that occurred on April 17. A discharge of an estimated 2,000 gallons took place at a lift station on the Alma Bryant school campus in Irvington.

The causes were a check valve failure and a pump failure. The overflow was absorbed into the ground and did not reach a body of water. Utility officials have corrected the issue. The area has been cleaned and disinfected.

Dr. Bernard H. Eichold II, Health Officer for Mobile County, advises area residents to take precautions when coming into contact with any standing water that may have accumulated as a result of this overflow. Those who have come into direct contact with untreated sewage are advised to wash their hands and clothing thoroughly.
