Beat the rush: review school vaccination requirements now

MOBILE, Ala. — With the new school year beginning August 10, the Mobile County Public School System is reminding parents and caregivers to review their children’s vaccination status with their health care provider now, rather than waiting until the last minute. Alabama’s School Immunization Law requires that every student enrolled in day care, Head Start, and public or private schools have appropriate documentation on file at the facility they attend.

Under state law, each child must have either a valid Alabama Certificate of Immunization or an approved Alabama Religious Exemption Form on record at their school or childcare program. The Alabama Certificate of Immunization is completed and provided by your child’s health care provider after reviewing the child’s vaccination history and ensuring all required vaccines are up to date.

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to schedule appointments early to avoid delays in school entry. Health care providers can review shot records, answer questions, and update vaccines as needed based on the child’s age and grade level. Waiting until just before the first day of school can lead to crowded clinics, longer wait times, and the risk that a child may not have the documentation needed to start class on time.

Families can review Alabama’s vaccination requirements and recommended schedules on the Alabama Department of Public Health website at: https://www.alabamapublichealth.gov/immunization. Parents should use this information as a guide and then confirm specific needs with their child’s physician, pediatrician, or other health care provider.

For families seeking a Religious Exemption Form, only their local county health department can review and issue this documentation. Parents or legal guardians who wish to request a religious exemption should contact the Mobile County Health Department to learn more about the process, required appointments, and any necessary paperwork.

“Keeping children up to date on vaccines is not only a school requirement, it is one of the best ways to protect them from serious, preventable diseases,” said Dr. Kevin Michaels, Health Officer for Mobile County. “By checking records and talking with your health care provider now, you can help ensure a smooth start to the school year on August 10.”
