Breastfeeding room at Keeler renovated by WIC
MOBILE, Ala. — The Mobile County Health Department (MCHD) and its Women, Infants & Children (WIC) supplemental nutrition program are major proponents of breastfeeding. The mission of peer counselors is designed to support initial prenatal and postpartum mothers throughout their pregnancy and breastfeeding journey.
“To better serve our participants, we have stepped it up a notch,” said LaDina Hudson, WIC’s Breastfeeding Coordinator. “Our newly remodel and freshly painted breastfeeding room allows our moms to breastfeed in style as well as comfort.”
Hudson and her team have updated the nursing room with several new gadgets. Located on the second floor of Keeler Memorial Building (251 North Bayou Street in Mobile), the room now offers refrigerated water for breastfeeding moms to stay hydrated, a changing table with disposable changing pads, touch lamp control as well as an area to plug electronics if needed.
“Mobile County WIC is excited about our new room and has plans to extend the renovations amongst other clinics,” Hudson said. “This is the perfect way to gain breastfeeding support in a quiet, private area while having all your questions answered by a well-qualified team of peer counselors.”
WIC’s Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program (BFPC) consists of three peer counselors: Andrea Portis, Terilyn Hodges, and Nafeesah-As-Saleeyah. They can help troubleshoot supply issues and talk through barriers of breastfeeding.
“You too can experience a luxurious nursing room and dedicated staffing at Keeler,” Hudson said. “We look forward to seeing you.”
