Community Health Worker recognized on social media
MOBILE, Ala. — The Mobile County Health Department (MCHD) is proud to recognize Tia Taylor, one of its dedicated Community Health Workers, after being highlighted on social media for promoting safe sex awareness.
Team Barber Boy Barbershop is one of MCHD’s valued community partners. Shop owner Justin Boykin featured Taylor in a post encouraging the community — especially teens and young adults — to make informed choices and practice safe sex.
“Mr. Boykin’s ongoing commitment to uplifting the city and sharing positive, health-focused messages underscores the powerful role local businesses play in public health outreach,” said Cherrite Peterson, who oversees MCHD’s Disease Surveillance & Control team. “Barbershops have long served as trusted spaces for conversation, mentorship, and community support, and this collaboration reflects how meaningful partnerships can strengthen health education across Mobile County.”
As the post emphasized, sexual health education is essential for everyone, especially young people navigating relationships and new responsibilities. MCHD encourages teens and young adults to stay informed, protect themselves, and access the resources available throughout our community.
“Mobile County’s 2025 STI data show that sexually transmitted infections remain a serious and growing threat, especially for our teens and young adults,” said Dr. Kevin Michaels, Health Officer for Mobile County. “STI prevention, testing, and timely treatment must be a shared priority for every family, school, health care provider, and community partner in Mobile County.”
Anyone who would like to be tested can visit MCHD’s Public Health Clinic in the Newburn Building at 248 Cox Street in Mobile. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please call 251-690-8831.
“Talking openly about sexual health, using protection consistently, getting tested after new or multiple partners, and seeking treatment right away are simple steps that protect not only your own health, but the health of your partners, your family, and our entire community,” Dr. Michaels said.
