COVID-19 vaccinations in Semmes moving to Wednesdays

MOBILE, Ala. — The COVID-19 Response Team with the Mobile County Health Department (MCHD) has been providing vaccinations for several weeks at its Semmes Health Center (3810 Wulff Road East). Starting on March 2, the service will move from Fridays to Wednesdays.

Erin Coker, who oversee MCHD’s Emergency Preparedness division, said the change is taking place because more clients use the Semmes location on Wednesdays. Times for the vaccinations will also be expanded, starting at 9 a.m. and now continuing until 3:30 p.m.

Clients may select from either the Pfizer (adult or pediatric), Moderna, or Johnson & Johnson vaccines. The vaccinations will continue to take place in MCHD’s new mobile medical trailer called the “Public Health Response Unit.”

It is a 2022 ATC Quest Custom Medical Trailer. This is the first of two identical units. The second trailer is estimated to arrive in March. It was secured with the Centers of Disease Control & Prevention’s Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity for Prevention and Control of Emerging Infectious Diseases (ELC) funds that were passed through the Alabama Department of Public Health to MCHD.

It was purchased for the COVID-19 Response Team to provide testing and vaccination services within Mobile County. In an effort to enhance accessibility to the community, it will be placed at outlying clinics. The administered services will be provided as a walk-in, no appointment is needed.

The Prevention & Wellness directorate is one of the cornerstones of traditional health services of MCHD. Since 1816, public health in Mobile County has been one of education, prevention, and the promotion of wellness.

The mobile medical trailer will help MCHD obtain one of its primary goals, which is to encourage health interventions by providing collaborative and informative education to the community. Disease prevention, community resource services, health promotion, and health education are many of the services provided by Prevention & Wellness.
