Dr. Michaels serves as panelist for Men’s Health Month event

MOBILE, Ala. — Dr. Kevin Michaels, Health Officer for Mobile County, was a guest panelist on June 27 at the Men’s Health Month event in Montgomery. It was sponsored by ADPH’s Office of Health Equity and Minority Health (OHEMH).

June is celebrated as National Men’s Health Month, with the purpose of raising awareness about men’s health issues and encouraging proactive health measures.

Key speakers from across the state spoke on oral health, diet, exercise, and mental health. This men-only event took place at the RSA Tower. Dr. Michaels; Dr. Scott Harris, Alabama State Health Officer; and Dr. Brian Stone, Jasper Urological Associates, answered questions from men in the audience.

“The big take-away point was establishing the importance of the doctor patient relationship,” according to Dr. Michaels. “This would allow for the necessary men’s health screenings and if needed medical treatment and behavioral health changes to improve overall wellness. Women typically live longer than men.”

William Kennedy, ADPH Senior Social Worker, moderated the engaging program. Dr. Michaels said it was a great event for men to share their concerns and to ask questions that were universal to all.

The re-envisioned Office of Minority Health is the newly established OHEMH, located in the Office of Governmental Affairs and Community Relations. Along with stakeholder input, it has developed a 3-year blueprint for elevating health as a priority in Alabama.
