Early reading builds bright futures: Families encouraged to explore Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library

MOBILE, Ala. — Early childhood is a critical time for language development, learning, and family bonding, and reading aloud is one of the most powerful ways parents and caregivers can support a child’s growth. This summer, families are encouraged to make books part of their daily routine and to explore opportunities such as Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to help nurture a love of reading from an early age.

Reading with young children helps build vocabulary, listening skills, imagination, and school readiness. Even a few minutes of reading each day can create valuable one-on-one time while helping children develop the foundation they need for lifelong learning.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a strong example of how communities can support early literacy by putting books into the hands of young children. Pairing book access with regular reading at home can help families create healthy routines that support both emotional connection and early childhood development.

“Books open the door to learning long before a child enters a classroom,” said Dr. Kevin Michaels, Health Officer for Mobile County. “When families read together regularly, they are strengthening not only literacy skills, but also confidence, curiosity, and connection.”

The Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program provides free books to children every month from birth until age 5. Each child gets a book with their name on it, delivered right to their home, making reading fun and easy. Enroll your child today at https://tinyurl.com/yc747jej.

Community organizations, schools, libraries, and family-serving agencies are encouraged to work together to promote early literacy and connect parents with resources that help children get off to a strong start.

Together, by supporting children’s health, encouraging lifelong learning, and strengthening families, we can help build a stronger and more resilient Mobile community.
