Family Health to host Books, Balls, Blocks event

MOBILE, Ala. — Family Health, the primary care division of the Mobile County Health Department, is joining with Help Me Grow Alabama to sponsor the Books, Balls, and Blocks (BBB) event on Saturday, July 18. The event will take place at the Keeler Memorial Building (251 North Bayou Street in Mobile) from 8 a.m. to noon.

This is a free family event for children aged 1 month to 5½ years, consisting of multiple volunteer-led activity stations at which parents engage with their child in developmentally appropriate play while completing the ASQ-3 and ASQ:SE-2 developmental questionnaires. Parents will be provided with questionnaire results that highlight the child’s strengths as well as areas in need of more support. Parents who complete the screenings will have the opportunity to enroll in Help Me Grow to receive ongoing support from a Care Coordinator in their area.

Help Me Grow Alabama (HMGA) is a free resource that connects families with children from birth to age 8 to community and developmental resources regardless of income, insurance, etc. When a family enrolls in HMGA, a compassionate Care Coordinator will work with the family to connect them to any necessary resources in their area.

Other partners in the event include the Alabama Partnership for Children and the Alabama Department of Mental Health. Other community agencies will also be present to share the services. Free school supplies will be available while quantities last.

Detection Of Developmental Delay: Children participate in the event while their parents complete the ASQ-3 and the ASQ:SE-2 screener. Parents have an opportunity to evaluate and learn more about their child’s development.

Parent Education: Parents can engage in activities to experience appropriate developmental play with their children. Parents can interact with the activities and will hopefully get ideas for how to play at home. There is also a resource table with information on child development and community services.

Community Engagement: Volunteers from the community and various sponsoring agencies are crucial to a successful BBB. The community supplies volunteers, and this allows volunteers to engage in and increase awareness of appropriate child development.
