Foodborne illness still a threat, stay safe this holiday season
MOBILE, Ala. — As families and friends gather to celebrate the holidays, the Mobile County Health Department reminds everyone that foodborne illness remains a real and preventable risk. Holiday gatherings often include home-cooked meals and shared dishes, making it even more important to follow strict food safety practices.
“Everyone wants to enjoy their favorite foods with loved ones, but a single mistake in the kitchen can turn a celebration into a health emergency,” said Dr. Kevin Michaels, Health Officer for Mobile County. “We encourage the community to take simple, proven steps to keep everyone safe.”
The following are key food safety tips:
• Cook all foods thoroughly. Use a food thermometer to be sure meats reach safe internal temperatures.
• Keep everything clean. Wash hands, utensils, and surfaces with soap and water before, during, and after preparing food.
• Avoid cross-contamination. Use separate cutting boards and utensils for raw and ready-to-eat foods.
• Don’t prepare food if you’re sick. If you feel unwell, let someone else take the lead in the kitchen to protect your family and guests.
Foodborne illness can cause symptoms ranging from mild stomach upset to severe dehydration and hospitalization. A little caution goes a long way in ensuring this season stays memorable for the right reasons.
