Local organizations highlighted during National Health Center Week
MOBILE, Ala. — Dr. Kevin Michaels, Health Officer for Mobile County, wishes to share with the community that National Health Center Week (NHCW) is taking place August 3-9. The annual event highlights the essential role Community Health Centers (CHC) play in improving public health and providing Americans with an equal opportunity for health.
“Mobile County is fortunate to have four Community Health Centers serving southwest Alabama,” Dr. Michaels said. “They provide a safety net to offer quality healthcare on a sliding fee scale to help Mobile County and lower southwest Alabama communities.”
CHCs represent the nation’s largest primary care network, serving 32.5 million patients nationwide. Those located in Mobile County include:
• Family Health, the primary care division of the Mobile County Health Department, with locations throughout Mobile County and Bay Minette.
• Franklin Primary Health Center, which has 20 locations across six Alabama counties.
• Mostellar Medical Center, which serves patients of southern Mobile County and operates the Southwest Alabama Health Services in McIntosh.
• Accordia Health, the primary care division of AltaPointe Health that is in a partnership with USA Health.
This year’s NHCW celebration, launched by the National Association of Community Health Centers, focuses on the theme: “America’s Health Centers Celebrating 60 Years of Improving our Nation’s Health.” CHCs across the country join the celebration through a host of scheduled events that include resource fairs, back-to-school drives, and health screenings.
With a mission to make high-quality, affordable care available to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay or insurance status, CHCs save lives and reduce healthcare costs on the front lines of our nation’s most pressing public health challenges. They are powered by a workforce of more than 310,000 dedicated professionals who reach beyond the walls of the exam room with effective services that not only prevent illness but also address the factors that may cause it.
Dr. Michaels goes on to say that “our CHCs in Mobile County provide services for all stages of life on a sliding fee scale, so all can afford the quality care. Check out the closest CHC to see if it meets your health care needs.”
Ten percent of the U.S. population obtain healthcare from CHCs; however, CHCs represent roughly 1 percent of total annual healthcare spending in the United States. By keeping people healthy, primary care doesn’t just save lives – it saves money. To learn more about the mission and accomplishments of CHCs, visit www.nachc.org.
