Make Testing a Habit: Stop the Spread of STIs in Our Community
MOBILE, Ala. — The Mobile County Health Department is reminding residents that sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remain a serious and ongoing concern in our community. Since the beginning of 2026, more than 1,300 chlamydia cases, more than 480 gonorrhea cases, and more than 140 syphilis cases have been reported in Mobile County, along with dozens of newly reported HIV infections.
“These numbers tell us that STIs are circulating widely and that many people may be infected without knowing it,” said Dr. Kevin Michaels, Health Officer for Mobile County. “The good news is that STIs are preventable, many are curable, and all are more manageable when detected early. We urge residents to protect themselves, get tested regularly, and seek treatment promptly if they test positive.”
Chlamydia and gonorrhea continue to account for the majority of reported STIs in the county, with 1,349 chlamydia and 487 gonorrhea cases reported so far this year. Syphilis also remains a concern, with 142 cases reported, and 39 newly reported HIV infections underscore the need for ongoing prevention, testing, and linkage to care. Many STIs have few or no symptoms at first, which means people can unknowingly spread infections to partners.
Residents can reduce their risk by using condoms correctly every time they have sex, limiting the number of sexual partners, and talking openly with partners and healthcare providers about STI testing. Regular screening is especially important for sexually active adolescents and young adults, pregnant people, and others at higher risk. Low-cost testing and treatment are available through the Mobile County Health Department and other local providers.
