MAWSS reports on Sanitary Sewer Overflow

MOBILE, Ala. — Mobile Area Water & Sewer System (MAWSS) responded to a Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) on June 12 that was reported by Baykeeper at 7273 Wilson Street.

Approximately 799,817 gallons of wastewater overflowed into an eroded ditch within an easement between Airport Boulevard and Old Shell Road. Of the total overflow, 622,080 gallons were contained in the ditch and approximately 177,737 gallons flowed into Milkhouse Creek.

MAWSS officials say an access road was built to mobilize equipment to the site. A bypass pump was set up to stop the overflow and continue conveyance of wastewater around the broken section of pipe. Repairs are being made to restore service through the pipe.

Dr. Kevin Michaels, Health Officer for Mobile County, advises area residents to take precautions when coming into contact with any standing water that may have accumulated as a result of this overflow. Those who have come into direct contact with untreated sewage are advised to wash their hands and clothing thoroughly.

Area residents should take precautions when using Milkhouse Creek for recreational purposes because of this overflow. All seafood harvested in this general area should be thoroughly cooked before eating. People should wash hands after cleaning seafood and before preparing food.
