MAWSS reports on Sanitary Sewer Overflows

MOBILE, Ala. — Mobile Area Water & Sewer System (MAWSS) responded to multiple Sanitary Sewer Overflows (SSO) near 8141 Airport Boulevard. These overflows, which began August 25 and ended August 26, occurred when heavy rainfall infiltrated the sewer system.

MAWSS is addressing overflows with capital projects. Below are the documented locations, accumulated totals, and receiving waters:

Location Gallons Receiving Water
Airport Blvd (Easement; MH-164) 29,600 Halls Mill Creek
Airport Blvd (Easement; MH-166) 29,600 Halls Mill Creek

Dr. Kevin P. Michaels, Health Officer for Mobile County, advises area residents to take precautions when coming into contact with any standing water that may have accumulated as a result of these overflows. Those who have come into direct contact with untreated sewage are advised to wash their hands and clothing thoroughly.

Area residents should take precautions when using Halls Mill Creek for recreational purposes because of these overflows. All seafood harvested in this general area should be thoroughly cooked before eating. People should wash hands after cleaning seafood and before preparing food.
