MCHD and Family Health take part in Black Family Wellness Expo

MOBILE, Ala. — The Mobile County Health Department (MCHD) and Family Health, its primary care division, partnered with the Greater Mobile (AL) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated at the annual Black Family Wellness Expo. The event took place Saturday, March 21, at The Shoppes of Bel Air Mall.

“This event is more than a gathering,” said Dr. Tamekia Cunningham, the event Chair. “It is a movement toward improving health outcomes and bridging disparities within our community. The Expo offered free health screenings, engaging educational sessions, entertainment, and a diverse selection of vendors committed to promoting wellness and empowerment.”

MCHD remains committed to advancing prevention-focused strategies that promote healthier communities. As emphasized by Dr. Stephanie Woods-Crawford, Executive Director of Prevention and Wellness, “Prevention is the foundation of public health—when we invest in outreach, education, and early intervention, we create pathways to healthier outcomes while addressing the social determinants that impact the well-being of our community. Initiatives such as The Links’ Black Family Wellness Expo provide critical opportunities to engage residents, deliver vital health information, and connect individuals to resources that support overall wellness. Participation in these types of events not only strengthens community partnerships but also directly supports MCHD’s mission by meeting people where they are and fostering meaningful connections that drive lasting healthy outcomes.”

MCHD’s Prevention & Wellness Directorate had several programs to participate in the event providing education and awareness — Community Prevention and Outreach Programs, WIC and Nutrition Services, Fatherhood Initiative, Healthy Start Enhanced, Tobacco and Overdose Prevention, STD, Lead Poisoning Prevention, Maternal & Child Health, and Environmental Health Services. Family Health’s Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program offered HIV testing to 32 participants during the expo. A privacy tent was used to ensure confidentiality, helping to ease fears for many individuals — especially those being tested for HIV for the first time. In addition to testing, participants received education on HIV and the latest prevention methods, including information about PrEP medications and how they work.
