MCHD announces events for National Breastfeeding Month
MOBILE, Ala. — National Breastfeeding Month is observed each August. This year’s theme is “Forward Together: celebrating strength and determination … to promote, protect and support breastfeeding.”
The Mobile County Health Department (MCHD) and its Women, Infants & Children (WIC) supplemental nutrition program are major proponents of breastfeeding. “Breast milk provides nearly every nutrient a baby needs to thrive and grow for their first year of life. Breastfeeding also provides numerous other benefits such as increased maternal-child bonding, boosting immunity and reducing the risks of various illnesses and disease even later in life,” said Ginger Stabler, District Nutrition Director.
To enhance our breastfeeding program, Mobile County has brought back in-person sessions called “The Lactation Circle.” The program is operated by LaDina Hudson, breastfeeding coordinator, and three peer counselors — Andrea Portis, Terilyn Hodges and Alexis Williams — who encourage breastfeeding, help troubleshoot supply issues and talk through barriers of breastfeeding.
Hudson and the peer counselors will be hosting several events throughout the month of August to celebrate our breastfeeding mothers. A “Breastfeeding Baby Shower” is a collaboration with MCHD vendors and WIC nutritionist for all WIC mothers to provide information about their services to our participants. It is set for August 9 at the Keeler Memorial Building’s Auditorium (251 North Bayou Street in Mobile, Second Floor) from 9 to 11 a.m.
An Educational Breastfeeding Booth will be set up at the following locations from 9 a.m. to noon:
- Monday, August 11, Semmes Clinic (3810 Wulff Road in Semmes),
- Tuesday, August 12, Citronelle Clinic (19250 Mobile Street North in Citronelle),
- Monday, August 20, Southwest Mobile Clinic (5580 Inn Road in Mobile)
- Wednesday, August 22, Eight Mile Clinic (4009 Saint Stephens Road in Eight Mile)
There will be an Alabama Statewide Virtual Breastfeeding Class titled “Breastfeeding Strategies for a Strong Start” on Friday, August 29, from noon to 2 p.m. This will be a virtual event hosted by Alabama WIC’s peer counselors.
