MCHD encourages getting vaccinations for influenza

MOBILE, Ala. — The Mobile County Health Department (MCHD) is encouraging all residents ages 6 months and older to get vaccinated against seasonal influenza, emphasizing that annual flu vaccination remains the most effective way to protect individuals, families, and the broader community from serious illness.

“Flu is often underestimated, but it can lead to severe complications — even in otherwise healthy individuals,” said Dr. Kevin Michaels, Health Officer for Mobile County. “Vaccination is a simple, safe step that protects not only you, but also those around you who may be more vulnerable.”

Public health officials note that recent outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases have renewed conversations about vaccine effectiveness and necessity. Decades of scientific evidence consistently demonstrate that flu vaccines are safe, reduce the risk of infection, and significantly lower the chances of severe illness, hospitalization, and death.

Research also shows that even mild flu infections can increase the risk of serious complications such as heart attack and stroke, particularly in older adults. National organizations including the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases and the American Heart Association continue to recommend annual flu vaccination as a critical preventive measure.

“Flu is not just a bad cold,” Michaels added. “It can have lasting and sometimes life-threatening consequences. Vaccination helps reduce the spread of disease in our community and protects our healthcare system from unnecessary strain.”

Health officials also address common misconceptions about flu vaccines. Extensive, large-scale studies have shown that receiving the flu vaccine does not increase the risk of getting the flu. Instead, vaccination primes the immune system to respond more effectively if exposure occurs.

MCHD encourages residents to get vaccinated early in the season and to take advantage of convenient options available through healthcare providers, pharmacies, and local clinics.
