MCHD encourages public to be a lifesaver during American Heart Month

MOBILE, Ala. — American Heart Month is observed each February. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. but impacts some communities disproportionately.

The Mobile County Health Department’s Safety Committee has sent out a newsletter to staff members about the importance of knowing how to administer First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). The message stated:

“Being prepared to respond to a medical emergency is a critical responsibility for us all. The MCHD Safety Committee has released the January 2026 Safety Newsletter, focusing on First Aid and CPR Refreshers.

“While many of us may recall the famous (and chaotic) CPR training scene from the TV show ‘The Office,’ there is one very real lesson to take away from it: the importance of the correct rhythm. Research shows that performing compressions to the beat of ‘Stayin’ Alive’ provides the ideal 100-120 beats per minute required for effective CPR. Unlike the chaos at Dunder Mifflin, we want you to feel calm, prepared, and empowered.”

Here are key safety reminders from MCHD’s Safety Committee:

  • First Aid Fundamentals: Knowing how to treat minor burns, cuts, and sprains prevents small incidents from escalating into serious medical conditions.
  • The Power of AEDs: Please take a moment this week to identify the nearest Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in your work area. These devices are designed to provide life-saving instructions automatically during a cardiac event.
  • Professional Certification: We encourage all staff to keep their CPR and First Aid certifications current. Organizations like the American Red Cross and National Safety Council offer excellent refresher courses.
  • Emergency Protocol: In any medical emergency, your first step should always be to call 911 or emergency services to ensure professional help is on the way.

Did you know more than 23,000 children experience cardiac arrest outside of the hospital each year? Learn CPR today so you can be ready and become a part of the Nation of Lifesavers. Because no one, especially our most precious ones, should face a life-changing moment alone.
