MCHD encourages self-care during Stress Awareness Month
MOBILE, Ala. — April is Stress Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about the effects of stress on both physical and mental health and to encourage healthy ways to cope. Although stress is a normal part of life, ongoing stress can lead to sleep problems, difficulty concentrating, physical symptoms, and worsening health conditions.
The Mobile County Health Department (MCHD) is encouraging residents to make self-care a priority this month by taking small, practical steps that support overall well-being. Practicing self-care can help people manage stress, strengthen resilience, and improve mood, energy, and focus.
“Self-care is not selfish — it is an important part of protecting your health,” said Dr. Kevin Michaels, Mobile County Health Officer. “Simple habits such as getting enough sleep, staying active, eating balanced meals, stepping away from constant news and social media, and keeping in touch with people you trust can make a meaningful difference.”
Self-care looks different for everyone, but several healthy habits are widely recommended. These include regular physical activity, nutritious meals and hydration, consistent sleep, calming practices such as deep breathing or meditation, gratitude, and support from friends, family, faith communities, or other trusted connections.
Residents should also recognize when it may be time to seek additional help. Professional support is important when symptoms such as changes in sleep or appetite, loss of interest in usual activities, irritability, trouble concentrating, or difficulty managing daily responsibilities continue for two weeks or more.
During Stress Awareness Month, MCHD encourages everyone to pause, check in with themselves, and make space for routines that help restore both mind and body. Even small acts of self-care each day can make a lasting difference over time.
If you or someone you know is struggling with or having thoughts of suicide, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
