MCHD encourages workplaces to support breastfeeding families during National Breastfeeding Month

MOBILE, Ala. — August is National Breastfeeding Month, and the Mobile County Health Department (MCHD) — along with community partners — is encouraging employers and organizations throughout Mobile County to support nursing mothers in the workplace.

MCHD’s Women, Infants & Children (WIC) supplemental nutrition program provides breastfeeding education, peer counseling, and in-person support opportunities for mothers and families across the county.

A supportive workplace includes reasonable break time and a private, safe, and comfortable space for employees to express breast milk. A bathroom or closet is not an appropriate lactation space; employers should identify a clean, functional location that protects privacy and allows mothers to continue contributing fully to the workforce. Federal workplace protections require reasonable break time and a private space, other than a bathroom, for eligible nursing employees to pump at work.

“Women are an essential part of our workforce, our families, and our community,” said Dr. Kevin Michaels, Mobile County’s Health Officer. “Supporting mothers who choose to breastfeed is a practical investment in the health and well-being of families and in the strength of our local workforce and community.”

MCHD encourages businesses, agencies, and community organizations to review their workplace policies, identify appropriate lactation spaces, and foster a culture that respects and supports working mothers. Through simple, thoughtful accommodations, Mobile County workplaces can help mothers and babies thrive.
