MCHD, Family Health take part in Project Homeless Connect

MOBILE, Ala. — In 2004, the San Francisco Department of Health created Project Homeless Connect (PHC) as a way to bring necessary services to individuals and families experiencing homelessness because conventional methods of service delivery were not meeting their needs.

PHC addresses homelessness by providing a “one-stop shop” experience where people are able to receive information and same-day services in a single location. Within two years of Project Homeless Connect, it was adopted by the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness as a national best practice to support local 10-Year Plans to End Homelessness.

The local version of PHC took place today at The Grounds in West Mobile (1035 Cody Road North). Since 2014, HOPE For All Gulf Coast has partnered with local service providers, organizations, and community members to host the event.

The local PHC is designed to provide needed services to the homeless of Mobile and Baldwin counties. The event provides legal assistance, dental and vision screenings, wellness assessments, haircuts, and access to housing assistance and mainstream resources (food stamps, state identification cards, et cetera).

The Mobile County Health Department and Family Health — its primary care division — were among the dozens of organizations to take part. Also attending the event was Dr. Kevin Michaels, Health Officer for Mobile County.

Staff representing MCHD and Family Health were from Healthy Start Enhanced, Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program, STD Surveillance, Tobacco Education, Vaccine Preventable Diseases, Animal Bites, Tuberculosis Surveillance, and Women, Infants & Children (WIC) supplemental nutrition services.
