MCHD launches new travel screening signs in clinics
MOBILE, Ala. — The Mobile County Health Department (MCHD) is alerting residents that they may see new signs at local medical clinics asking about recent travel before or during their visit. These travel screening signs are part of an ongoing effort to quickly identify and manage illnesses such as measles and other travel-related infections, helping protect patients, staff, and the wider community.
The new signage, displayed at clinic entrances and in waiting areas, asks patients to inform staff if they have traveled outside Mobile County, out of state, or internationally in the past 30 days, or if they have been around someone who became sick after travel. Patients may also be asked if they have symptoms such as fever, rash, cough, or other signs of infection so that staff can take extra precautions when needed.
“Travel connects us to the world, but it also connects communities to diseases that may not be common here at home,” said Dr. Kevin Michaels, Health Officer for Mobile County. “By asking a few simple questions at check-in, we can provide faster, safer care for everyone in our clinics.”
MCHD emphasizes that:
- Travel screening questions are a routine part of safe, modern medical care, not a reason for alarm.
- Patients will not be turned away or judged for their travel history; the information is used only to guide care and protect others.
- Sharing travel details helps providers recognize illnesses early, arrange appropriate testing, and coordinate with public health partners when necessary.
The new signs support MCHD’s broader work in disease surveillance and emergency preparedness, including monitoring measles, dengue, hantavirus, and other high-consequence infectious diseases that may be introduced by returning travelers. Residents planning international trips are encouraged to check CDC travel health notices and speak with their healthcare provider about recommended vaccines and preventive measures before they go.
