MCHD observes Anal Cancer Awareness Day
MOBILE, Ala. — “Today, on Anal Cancer Awareness Day, we are reminding our community that prevention, screening, and early detection matter,” said Dr. Kevin Michaels, Health Officer for Mobile County.
“Colorectal and anal cancers are often preventable and highly treatable when caught early, yet stigma and misinformation still keep too many people from getting the care they need. By encouraging open conversations and promoting screening, we can help save lives.”
The observance has several goals:
• Encourage someone to schedule a screening
• Help someone recognize symptoms earlier
• Reduce stigma around colorectal and anal cancers
• Normalize conversations about prevention
• Reach people who may not otherwise see this information
To help mark the day, Butts & Badges is an international awareness initiative that brings together healthcare professionals, community clinics, LGBTQ+ organizations, public health programs, and community leaders to increase awareness about colorectal and anal cancer.
These cancers are often preventable and highly treatable when caught early. Talk with your healthcare provider about your risk for colorectal and anal cancers and the screening options that may be right for you. There are four community health centers in Mobile County: Family Health, Accordia, Franklin Health Center, and Mostellar Clinic.
If you do not have a provider, please call Family Health at 251-690-8889 to schedule and discuss your health care needs.
