MCHD observes Black Maternal Health Week

MOBILE, Ala. — The Mobile County Health Department (MCHD) is currently observing Black Maternal Health Week. The theme in 2026 is “Rooted in Justice & Joy.”

MCHD’s Maternal & Child Health program said this event helps increase understanding, strengthen community support, and improve health outcomes for Black women and other expectant parents. The campaign draws attention to maternal health challenges affecting many Black women and families, and underscores the need for consistent, high-quality care and support throughout pregnancy and postpartum.

The state of Alabama has the third highest maternal mortality rate in the nation with Black mothers’ rates three times higher than white mothers. Among the contributing factors for these increased disparities are chronic health conditions including hypertension and diabetes as well as poor access to maternal care.

The Maternal & Child Health program is funded by the Title V Maternal and Child Health Services Block Grant in partnership with the Alabama Department of Public Health’s Bureau of Family Health Services. The MCHD program supports mothers and expectant parents living in Mobile County and provides education before, during & after pregnancy; safe sleep classes; education and resources for breastfeeding; car seat safety; and referrals to other invaluable programs including WIC services, Fatherhood Initiative, Healthy Start Enhanced (HSE), and Fetal & Infant Mortality Review (FIMR).
