MCHD observes Save-A-Life Day
MOBILE, Ala. — All 50 states are participating today in the second fully national event for distributing free naloxone called Save-A-Life Day. It began in 2020 with a two-county pilot program in West Virginia.
This is now a nationwide day of action that promotes year-round widespread naloxone access as one solution to the overdose crisis. In 2025 alone, communities distributed around 133,000 doses in a single day.
This year, People Engaged In Recovery (P.E.I.R.) sponsored the Mobile County’s Save-A-Life Day. They are also sponsoring Save A Life Day events in Baldwin and Washington counties.
“MCHD appreciates our partnership with People Engaged in Recovery (PEIR). Their teams will distribute Narcan in Mobile, Baldwin, and Washington counties,” said Danielle Simpson, who oversees the Overdose Prevention Program. “The MCHD Overdose Prevention Program will also distribute 164 individual boxes (2 doses per box), for a total of 328 single doses.”
“Today, opioid misuse is an epidemic in the United States and contributes to the death of nearly 70,000 people each year,” said Dr. Kevin Michaels, Health Officer for Mobile County. “Some people have a higher risk for opioid addiction than others. If you or a loved one is struggling with opioid use, help is available. Explore our resources below to start your recovery journey or learn how to offer support.”
MCHD’s Overdose Prevention Program has also provided numerous Prevention & Wellness kiosks across the community to offer free naloxone kits. More well known by one of its brand names, Narcan, it is an easy-to-use nasal spray that works to reverse opioid overdoses.
The kiosks are located at Vista Medical (4400 Rangeline Road in Tillman’s Corner), Shell Health (4321 Downtowner Loop North in Mobile), Semmes Pharmacy (8985 Moffett Road in Semmes) and MCHD’s Women, Infants & Children (WIC) office at 19255 North Main Street in Citronelle. The kiosk that was previously located at B-Bob’s Bar in Downtown Mobile will soon be transported to another site.
