MCHD offers carbon monoxide safety tips during cold weather

MOBILE, Ala. — The National Weather Service’s office in Mobile has announced that a Freeze Warning is currently in effect for the area as temperatures will plummet tonight.

Temperatures will drop into the mid to upper 20s for most of the area. Wind chills across coastal Alabama and Florida could be in the low 20s to teens.

“With life threatening cold weather arriving in in our immediate area, it’s crucial to remember the risks of carbon monoxide poisoning,” said Dr. Kevin Michaels, Health Officer for Mobile County. “As people turn up their heaters or use generators, the invisible and odorless gas can quickly build up indoors — especially with poorly vented appliances or by running generators too close to the house.

“Carbon monoxide poisoning can be deadly, with symptoms easily mistaken for the flu, including headaches, fatigue, or confusion.”

Here are some tips for dealing with the weather:

• Protect your family by installing and checking carbon monoxide detectors.
• Servicing heaters and vents.
• Never use grills or generators inside or near enclosed spaces. Stay safe and stay warm!
