MCHD Prevention & Wellness Kiosks put lifesaving resources within reach across Mobile County

MOBILE, Ala. — The Mobile County Health Department’s Prevention & Wellness Kiosk initiative is gaining national attention while helping build a growing Alabama network that puts lifesaving and preventive resources directly into the hands of community members.

MCHD recently featured the program in a poster presentation at the 2026 National Association of County and City Health Officials’ NACCHO 360 conference in Louisville, Kentucky. The presentation highlighted how public-health infrastructure funding, strategic partnerships, and community-driven solutions can work together to remove barriers and expand access to prevention resources.

Mobile County launched Alabama’s first Prevention & Wellness Kiosk initiative of its kind, helping establish a model that is now expanding across the state. Jefferson County currently operates 17 kiosks, while Montgomery and Elmore counties have launched a kiosk of their own. Together with the kiosks placed throughout Mobile County, these efforts are building a stronger statewide network for putting Narcan and other prevention resources directly into the hands of community members.

In its first year, MCHD’s initiative has demonstrated the power of meeting people where they are. By placing kiosks in accessible community locations and partnering with trusted community organizations, the project is making prevention more convenient, approachable, and available to residents.

The kiosks are stocked with free Narcan, gun locks, and male standard condoms provided by MCHD.

“Public health is at its strongest when we remove barriers and bring resources directly into the communities we serve,” said Danielle Simpson, Administrator of Community Outreach Programs at MCHD. “These kiosks create a simple, private, and convenient way for residents to access resources that can protect health and save lives.”

As of August 2026, the kiosks had dispensed 692 prevention products, including: 377 two-dose packages of Naloxone HCl Nasal Spray, commonly known by the brand name Narcan, 195 gun locks, and 92 packages of condoms.

Naloxone accounted for approximately 55 percent of all products dispensed and remained the most frequently accessed prevention resource. First-year utilization data also showed that among users who reported their reason for obtaining naloxone, bystander response was the most common reason — an encouraging sign that residents are preparing to respond to potential overdoses.

“Every naloxone kit placed in the hands of a community member is another opportunity to prevent a tragedy,” Simpson said. “Our residents are showing that they want to be prepared to help family members, friends, neighbors, and even strangers during an emergency.”

The NACCHO 360 presentation recognized the initiative as an example of community-based public-health innovation. It shared lessons learned during the project’s first year and showed how investments in public-health infrastructure can translate into practical, measurable impact at the local level.

“When you include the Prevention & Wellness Kiosks that MCHD has placed across Mobile County, the state has made great strides in the distribution of Narcan to communities,” said Dr. Kevin Michaels, Health Officer for Mobile County. “We now have strong examples in Montgomery, as well as Mobile, Elmore, and Jefferson counties. These ideas are influencing others to take action and save lives.”

Building on this momentum, MCHD looks forward to expanding its Prevention & Wellness Kiosk initiative as additional funding becomes available.
