MCHD programs recognize National Child Abuse Prevention Month

MOBILE, Ala. — During the month of April, National Child Abuse Prevention Month is recognized to highlight the importance of communities across the nation to support and encourage efforts to keep children safe by preventing child abuse and maltreatment.

It is a time for communities to focus on strengthening child and family well-being, raise awareness on the effects of child abuse, reignite the commitment to provide safe environments for children across the United States, and implement effective, sustainable strategies that prioritize actions that protect children.

“The Mobile County Health Department recognizes that a healthy child is a safe and protected child,” said Tokie Dunn, the Director for MCHD’s Community Prevention Programs. “Children are the future of our resilient communities and when they can feel free to learn, play, and grow in stress-free environments, they are better, families are better, and communities are better. It can be a positive benefit for all.”

Healthy and protected communities start with healthy and protected children. This year’s theme is “Doing Things Differently: Moving from the Challenge to the Change.”

The MCHD Fatherhood Initiative project funded by the Children’s Trust Fund of Alabama and the MCHD Maternal & Child Health program is funded by the Title V Maternal and Child Health Services Block Grant in partnership with the Alabama Department of Public Health’s Bureau of Family Health Services.

These programs joined others across the nation by helping to spread awareness by planting blue pin wheel gardens at several MCHD/Family Health clinic sites throughout Mobile County. The blue pin wheels represent powerful, visual symbols of National Child Abuse Prevention Month.
