MCHD promotes the life-saving power of vaccines during World Immunization Week

MOBILE, Ala. — The Mobile County Health Department (MCHD) is recognizing World Immunization Week, observed during the last week of April, by encouraging residents of all ages to stay up to date on recommended vaccines and to learn more about the vital role immunization plays in protecting public health.

Vaccines have long been one of the most powerful tools in medicine. Childhood vaccination remains one of the most effective strategies for controlling and preventing disease in our society, helping protect individuals, families, and the broader community from vaccine-preventable illnesses.

“World Immunization Week is an important reminder that vaccines save lives,” said Dr. Kevin Michaels, Health Officer for Mobile County. “Immunization protects people across the lifespan and remains one of the strongest defenses we have against serious disease.”

Once a person is immunized against a specific disease, the rate of illness declines, along with the severity of associated symptoms and complications. Through routine vaccination, communities are better able to reduce the spread of disease and protect those who may be most vulnerable.

The Mobile County Health Department encourages parents, caregivers, and adults to speak with their healthcare provider about recommended immunizations and to make sure their records are current.

Age-appropriate vaccines are available in the clinic or at many pharmacies across the county. If you don’t have a primary care provider visit one of the four Community Health Centers available in Mobile County: Family Health (MCHD’s primary care division), Franklin Primary Health Clinic, Mostellar Health Clinic, and Accordia Health.

By staying current on vaccination, you are protecting yourself, your loved ones, and the health of our community.
