MCHD takes part in Touch the Truck event
MOBILE, Ala. — Craighead Elementary School hosted their summer closing Touch the Truck event on June 26 by giving students the opportunity to explore a variety of mobile vehicles from various local agencies and organizations. The Mobile County Health Department’s (MCHD) Lead Poisoning Prevention Program (LPPP) participated in this year’s event by asking to have the Public Health Response Unit showcased.
The program team partnered with Craighead Elementary School earlier this month by hosting lead education classes with children in kindergarten through the fifth grade. The team created curriculum and interacted with the students to help raise awareness of the dangers of lead exposure and to increase the children’s knowledge of recognizing lead sources.
The goal of the Touch the Truck event is to expose students to a variety of career opportunities. Students in grades three through five received bingo cards with occupation-related questions. To win prizes, the students visited each vehicle displayed and engaged those representing the agency or organization to gather answers. Cabrina McShan served as the event coordinator for Craighead.
The team shared insights about their roles, including their favorite aspects of the job and work hours. They also shared important features of the Public Health Response Unit, and how the unit is used in the community. Students had the chance to tour the unit and learn about its purpose and its functions. The culminating Touch the Truck event was a great way to get children interested in the Mobile County Health Department, Lead Poisoning Prevention, and public health.
