MCHD teams take part in Babypalooza event

MOBILE, Ala. — On Saturday, September 20, several Mobile County Health Department (MCHD) programs joined alongside other community agencies and organizations for the 2025 Babypalooza Expo conducted at the Arthur R. Outlaw Mobile Convention Center in Downtown Mobile.

According to https://babypalooza.com, the expo takes place annually throughout many cities and is a community driven event open to the public. Hundreds attend these informative events which provide education, resources, and support for new and expectant parents through in-person and virtual baby expos. Many local agencies and organizations provide information on services that make preparing for baby a joyous and fun occasion. Attendees visit different vendors as well as pick up some free materials to help them in this new stage in life.

Several programs under the Bureau of Community & Nutrition Services represented MCHD for this year’s event. This included Lead Poisoning Prevention, Maternal & Child Health, Fetal Infant Mortality Review (FIMR), Women, Infants & Children supplemental nutrition (WIC), and Healthy Start Enhanced. These programs showcased education, services and resources including surveys for attendees to complete.

FIMR is also known as the Alabama Baby Coalition (ABC). The main focus for the program was on safe sleep. The staff was able to give away ABC canvas bags filled with info for the mom and dad including safe sleep books and applications for free pac-n-plays. The parents were also informed of the free car seat giveaways offered throughout the year, the importance of mom taking folic acid during pregnancy, and abstaining from tobacco, alcohol and drugs.

The Lead Poisoning Prevention table offered information related to keeping children safe from lead both inside and outside of the home. Parents had the opportunity to participate in a brief survey for a chance to win one of the lead program’s Swiffer Wet Jets, and eight families were lucky enough to pull the winning numbers.

The Maternal and Child Health program provided information on the benefits of breastfeeding as well as offered a breastfeeding survey. WIC, and Healthy Start Enhanced programs also provided education, information, and incentives for families.

More than 100 people attended the expo.
