MCHD teams take part in Health Start Enhanced’s May Day Play Day
MOBILE, Ala. — On Saturday, more than 50 families gathered at the Sullivan Center to celebrate community, family wellness, and support during a successful May Day Play Day outreach event hosted by the Mobile County Health Department’s Healthy Start Enhanced program. The event brought together pregnant and parenting participants for a day filled with education, resources, and family-friendly activities.
“Our team was thrilled to organize this event, which highlighted the accomplishments of our enrolled participants from the past school year, encouraged new families to join our program, and educated parents about additional community resources,” said Danielle Simpson, the Healthy State Enhanced’s Program Administrator.
Twelve local vendors participated, providing valuable information and resources focused on maternal and child health, parenting support, healthcare services, education, and other community-based programs available to families. Information booths were set up by various MCHD departments and initiatives, including Fetal and Infant Mortality Review (FIMR), Maternal Child Health, WIC, the Fatherhood Initiative, Family Health, and STD, Lead, and Tobacco Prevention programs. Additional community organizations included Mama Bloom Doula, Simple Health, Accordia Health, and Victory Professional Development Center.
Attendees enjoyed a variety of May Day-themed activities, including traditional games, giveaways, food, and opportunities to connect with local service providers. The event created a welcoming environment where families could learn about available resources while spending quality time together. The impact of this event included:
• Eight referrals to join the Healthy Start Enhanced program, five of which were for the Fatherhood component.
• One new enrollment in Maternal Child Health.
• Seven Safe Sleep referrals provided by FIMR.
• Seven referrals to the Bishop State Career Pathways Program provided by the Fatherhood Initiative.
• Three WIC appointments scheduled.
• STD testing provided for eight community members.
• Blood pressure and glucose checks offered by Accordia Health.
“Our goal was to bring families together in a fun and engaging setting, ensuring they have access to information and services that can support healthy pregnancies, healthy children, and strong families,” said Pebbles King, Bureau Director. “The strong community turnout demonstrates the importance of connecting families with resources in a meaningful and enjoyable way.”
The event emphasized the significance of community collaboration in supporting pregnant and parenting families. Through partnerships with local organizations, participants received educational materials, referrals, and information about programs designed to promote family well-being and improve health outcomes.
