MCHD to take part in Recovery Is Here event
MOBILE, Ala. — Recovery organizations and the Treatment and Recovery Committee of the Alabama Opioid Overdose and Addiction Council are launching Recovery Is Here — a powerful statewide campaign mobilizing action, awareness, and support around substance use disorder (SUD) during National Recovery Month this September.
Throughout September, Alabama’s community colleges will host a series of high-impact events that empower students and communities to act against addiction and toward recovery. Bishop State Community College will be hosting an event on Thursday for their students at 10 a.m. It is scheduled at the main campus located at 351 North Broad Street in Mobile.
“Recovery is here, and it begins with hope, action, and community,” said Dr. Kevin Michaels, Health Officer for Mobile County. “During the National Recovery Month, we stand together to break the stigma, honor the journey, and remind every person that is struggling with a substance use disorder that healing is possible and help is within their reach.”
Since 1989, September has marked National Recovery Month, a time to celebrate recovery, uplift those on the journey, and raise awareness about effective treatment and support. Led by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), this national movement brings together public and private organizations to spotlight the stories, services, and science behind recovery.
“Substance use disorder affects millions of Americans,” said Curt Lindsley, Executive Director of the Alabama Alliance for Recovery Residences and Campaign Director for Recovery Is Here, supported by the Treatment and Recovery Committee of the Alabama Opioid Overdose and Addiction Council.
“We’re showing up with real solutions, real support, and real hope. This isn’t just about awareness — it’s about action. Recovery is not just possible. Recovery is here.”
Each Recovery Is Here event includes:
• Resource Fair: Connect with local and statewide organizations offering recovery services, education, and support.
• Resourcing Recovery Presentation: Learn exactly how to access critical recovery resources for yourself or someone you know.
• Live Recovery Stories: Hear real, local stories of recovery through the Respect Initiative, followed by a live Q&A.
• Guest Remarks: Hear from leaders in education, recovery, and state government.
