MCHD urges caution as floodwaters pose hidden health risks

MOBILE, Ala. — The Mobile County Health Department (MCHD) is urging residents to use caution following a week of torrential rainfall that has led to widespread flooding and standing water across the area.

Recent heavy rains have caused water to accumulate in low-lying areas, neighborhoods, and roadways. While floodwaters may appear harmless, they can contain a mixture of contaminants, including agricultural runoff, industrial waste, and untreated sewage. Contact with this water can pose serious health risks.

Residents are strongly advised to avoid walking, playing, or driving through standing water whenever possible. Children and pets should be kept away from flooded areas.

If you come into contact with floodwater:

  • Remove and wash any clothing that was exposed as soon as possible.
  • Shower thoroughly with soap and clean water.
  • Clean and disinfect any items or surfaces that may have been contaminated.

“Floodwaters are not just rainwater,” said Dr. Kevin Michaels, Mobile County Health Officer. “They often carry harmful bacteria, chemicals, and debris that can lead to illness or injury. Taking simple precautions can help protect you and your family.”

MCHD will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as needed. Residents are encouraged to report significant flooding or public health concerns to local authorities.
