MCHD warns no safe tobacco products – including nicotine pouches
MOBILE, Ala. — The Mobile County Health Department (MCHD) is warning residents that there are no safe tobacco products, including popular nicotine pouches that are being marketed as “smokeless” or “tobacco-free.” Nicotine, regardless of how it is delivered, is an addictive drug that can harm health and is especially dangerous for teenagers whose brains are still developing.
“Nicotine pouches, vapes, and other new products may look cleaner than cigarettes, but they still deliver nicotine and can quickly lead to addiction,” said Kevin Michaels, MD, Health Officer for Mobile County. “We want parents and teens to understand that these products can interfere with normal brain development and increase the risk of long-term dependence.”
MCHD urges youth, young adults, and pregnant women not to use any nicotine or tobacco product and encourages parents and caregivers to talk with teens about the risks of nicotine addiction and social media marketing that makes these products seem harmless. Residents who want help quitting can call the Alabama Tobacco Quitline at 1-800-QUIT-NOW (784-8669).
