Measles prevention starts with vaccination

MOBILE, Ala. — Health officials are reminding families that vaccination remains the best protection against measles and other vaccine-preventable diseases. With children spending more time in group settings, traveling, and attending summer events, now is the time to make sure immunizations are current.

Measles is highly contagious and can spread quickly when an infected person is around others who are not protected. Even one case can lead to additional exposures and illness in schools, childcare settings, camps, and community spaces.

“Measles is not just a rash and fever. It can cause serious complications, especially in young children,” said Dr. Kevin Michaels, Health Officer for Mobile County. “Vaccination helps protect your child and helps protect others in our community.”

Parents and caregivers should review immunization records and schedule any needed appointments as soon as possible. Prevention is one of the best ways to keep children healthy and summer activities on track.
