MCHD programs host inaugural Community Baby Shower
MOBILE, Ala. — The Mobile County Health Department’s Maternal & Child Health Program, in collaboration with Healthy Start Enhanced, hosted an inaugural Community Baby Shower on Saturday morning at the Frederick D. Richardson Jr. Tricentennial Park.
The rain delayed the start of this inaugural event. However, it did not dampen the spirit of providing education, information, and resources to the many in the community who attended.
“Despite the rainy weather community, members still gathered to receive resources and linkages to care,” said Danielle Simpson, administrator of the Healthy Start Enhanced Program.
Several vendors — including MCHD’s Fatherhood Initiative, WIC supplemental nutrition program, USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital’s Lactation Coordinator, Mobile Community Action, and Life South — were on hand to make the event a success. More than thirty families were connected to valuable resources and services to help promote healthy outcomes for mothers, birthing people, and babies with nine referrals made.
“The presence and commitment of the community members and of the vendors made this event both impactful and meaningful,” said Ashley Brown-Joseph, Community Support Worker for the Maternal & Child Health Program.
Coming on the heels of Black Maternal Health Week (April 11-17) and National Child Abuse Prevention Month (April), this community event highlights the importance of working together to promote and improve the health and well-being of people in our community. “Nothing is more rewarding than seeing community programs collaborate for full implementation of resources for the county,” said Pebbles King, Bureau Director of Community and Nutrition Services.
MCHD’s Maternal & Child Health program is funded by the Title V Maternal and Child Health Services Block Grant in partnership with the Alabama Department of Public Health’s Bureau of Family Health Services. The Healthy Start Enhanced Initiative, a program of the Mobile County Health Department, is supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
