Mobile County Community Health Workers Coalition participates in a weatherization training
MOBILE, Ala. — In response to the COVID-19 pandemic during August of 2021, the Mobile County Health Department was awarded a $1 million grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It was used to increase the number of Community Health Workers in Mobile County and to help facilitate the creation of a Mobile County Community Health Worker Coalition.
According to the American Public Health Association definition, Community Health Workers are frontline public health workers who serve as trusted members and/or have a close understanding of the communities they serve who act as liaisons linking communities to health and social services.
On June 24, the Mobile County Community Health Workers Coalition — along with several community organizations — participated in a weatherization training hosted by Gulf Coast Creation Care.
Stephen Guesman, the WERiSE (Weatherize Every Residence in the Southeast) Technical Director with the Peoples Justice Council, trained the group on energy saving methods for homes and churches. The 3-hour in-person training took place at the Goodwill Gulf Coast complex. It concluded with a hands-on demonstration of energy-saving strategies at a home in the community.
With summer in full bloom and power bills on the rise because of extreme heat, the class pointed out that energy saving is a great way to reduce costs and contribute more to improving our homes, communities, and the environment.
