MCHD urges families to get students health-ready now — and reminds all residents that affordable care is available

MOBILE, Ala. — With the new school year approaching, the Mobile County Health Department (MCHD) is urging parents and caregivers to act now — not the week before school starts — to make sure their children are up to date on physicals, vaccinations, dental visits, and any ongoing health needs.

And for families worried about cost or coverage, the good news is this: you don’t have to go without care.

Four Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) organizations now operate multiple clinic sites across Mobile County, providing primary and preventive care for children, adults, and seniors — regardless of insurance status or ability to pay.

WHAT IS A COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER?

Community Health Centers (CHCs) are federally supported, community-based clinics that deliver high-quality medical, dental, and behavioral health services on a sliding fee scale tied to family size and income. No one is turned away.

In Mobile County, this safety net is anchored by four organizations: Family Health (the primary care division of the Mobile County Health Department), Franklin Primary Health Center, AltaPointe/Accordia Health, and Mosteller Health Clinic.

Together, these centers make quality care available in communities throughout Mobile County. Walk-in and same-day appointments are available at many sites, helping ensure that cost and transportation are not barriers to receiving essential care.

“Health care is a basic need, not a luxury,” said Dr. Kevin Michaels, Health Officer for Mobile County. “These health centers are here for working families, older adults, and young people who might otherwise delay care because of cost. If you have lost coverage or are worried about affording a doctor’s visit, there is a place in Mobile County where you can be seen.”
