Mobile County Health Department warn residents about dangerous ‘gas station drugs’

MOBILE, Ala. — Products containing tianeptine and kratom may be easy to find in convenience stores, smoke shops, online marketplaces, and gas stations, but easy access does not mean they are safe or effective. Tianeptine is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for any medical use, and kratom has not been shown to be safe or effective for treating medical conditions in the United States. Both products are not sold in Alabama and are illegal.

Both substances are associated with serious health risks. Reported harms include confusion, seizures, liver damage, breathing problems, dependence, withdrawal symptoms, and in some cases death. Tianeptine goes by other names such as Neptune’s Fix, Zaza Red, TDD Red and Tianna. It is not safe.

Some people may turn to these products while looking for relief from chronic pain, depression, anxiety, or opioid withdrawal symptoms. But self-treating with tianeptine or kratom can delay proven care and may increase the risk of addiction, overdose, or other severe health consequences.

“Just because a product is sold at a gas station or online does not mean it is safe,” said Dr. Kevin Michaels, Mobile County Health Officer. “Tianeptine and kratom carry real health risks, and people deserve accurate information and access to proven medical care.”

Residents who are struggling with pain, mental health concerns, or substance use should be encouraged to speak with a licensed health care provider about safer, evidence-based treatment options. The FDA also advises consumers to avoid products containing tianeptine and to seek professional help for opioid dependence, depression, anxiety, pain, or related conditions.

Mobile County has four Community Health Centers for access to quality medical care. They are Family Health, Accordia, Franklin Primary Health Center, and Mostellar Medical Center.  To request an appointment with Family Health, call 251-690-8889.
