Mobile County Health Department works to help new businesses to open

MOBILE, Ala. — The Mobile County Health Department’s (MCHD) Bureau of Environmental Health ensures the safety of the citizens of Mobile County by seeking compliance in food and lodging, onsite sewage, and the reduction of vector-borne illnesses.

These goals are accomplished through three programs within the Bureau. These programs are Inspections Services, Onsite Sewage, and Vector Control.

“Inspection Services has been engaged in assisting entrepreneurial business owners with new and remodeled plan reviews for future restaurants in Mobile County,” said Brad Philips, who oversees Inspection Services. “As the economy gets stronger, there has been an influx of businesses seeking to open restaurants, convenience stores, and bars in the county.”

Inspection Services has been working diligently with business owners, along with local and county building trades to ensure the process of plan reviews is handled effectively and efficiently. With more than 2,900 restaurants permitted in Mobile County and the record number of plan reviews submitted to Inspection Services (150 submitted for review in 2024), MCHD is looking forward to meeting the challenges of our business community.

Working with business owners is just one of the many tasks handled by MCHD’s Inspection Services. Any establishment that sells food to the public, operates a food processing facility, or operates a hotel or lodging facility is required by State Law to have a permit from the county health department in the county in which they operate.

Body art facilities and individual body art operators are required to have a license and permit respectively. MCHD further requires all semi-public and public swimming pools to be permitted, and child daycare centers keeping 12 or more under school-age children for over four hours to receive an authorization to operate.
