Mobile County highlights free Narcan; One small spray can save one life

MOBILE, Ala. — To help prevent overdose deaths, the Mobile County Health Department (MCHD) is launching a reminder campaign about the availability of naloxone (Narcan) for residents.

Narcan, a nasal spray that can quickly reverse an opioid overdose, is available through free mail order programs, community organizations, and local pharmacies without an individual prescription. Officials stress that carrying Narcan is an important step for families, friends, and anyone who may encounter someone at risk for overdose.

“Narcan is simple, safe, and it saves lives,” said Dr. Kevin Michaels, Mobile County’s Health Officer who is on the Alabama Rescue Committee. “You do not need to be a medical professional to use it.”

Through Alabama’s naloxone programs, Mobile County residents can complete a short online training and receive Narcan kits by mail at no cost. Narcan is also sold over the counter in many pharmacies, and the Alabama standing order allows pharmacists to dispense naloxone without a prescription request from a doctor. The Alabama Rescue Committee urges people who use opioids, their families, workers in public spaces, and community volunteers to keep Narcan available as part of a community wide safety net.

MCHD also offers harm-reduction kiosks that provide free naloxone kits and condoms throughout the community. They can be found at B-Bob’s Bar (213 Conti Street in Mobile), Vista Medical (1359 Spring Hill Avenue in Mobile), Shell Health (4321 Downtowner Loop North in Mobile), Semmes Pharmacy (8985 Moffett Road in Semmes) and at MCHD’s Women, Infants & Children (WIC) office at 19255 North Main Street in Citronelle.
