Mobile County joins statewide effort to expand Narcan access
MOBILE, Ala. — As Alabama works to reduce opioid-related deaths, the Mobile County Health Department (MCHD) is reminding residents that help is close at hand in the form of naloxone (Narcan).
Narcan is a proven medication that reverses opioid overdoses and is available across the state through free mail order kits, local partners, and pharmacies that can provide naloxone without an individual prescription. Community leaders are asking residents to learn where to get Narcan and how to use it in an emergency.
“Narcan is simple, safe, and it saves lives,” said Dr. Kevin Michaels, Mobile County’s Health Officer who is serving on the Alabama Rescue Committee. “If a person is not breathing normally or hard to wake, calling 9-1-1 and using Narcan right away can make the difference between life and death.”
Alabama’s naloxone programs allow Mobile County residents to complete a brief online training and receive Narcan nasal spray kits by mail at no cost. In addition, Narcan 4 mg nasal spray is now available over the counter, and under Alabama’s standing order, most major pharmacies can dispense naloxone directly to customers. The Alabama Rescue Committee encourages people who use opioids, their family members and friends, those working in public facing roles, and community leaders to carry Narcan as a practical tool to prevent overdose deaths.
MCHD also offers harm-reduction kiosks that provide free naloxone kits and condoms throughout the community. They can be found at B-Bob’s Bar (213 Conti Street in Mobile), Vista Medical (1359 Spring Hill Avenue in Mobile), Shell Health (4321 Downtowner Loop North in Mobile), Semmes Pharmacy (8985 Moffett Road in Semmes) and at MCHD’s Women, Infants & Children (WIC) office at 19255 North Main Street in Citronelle.
