Mobile County residents encouraged to take action for World Heart Day

MOBILE, Ala. — Heart health is everyone’s business, and this September 29, Mobile County residents are invited to take part in World Heart Day, a global movement dedicated to raising awareness about cardiovascular disease (CVD) and how to prevent it.

CVD remains the leading cause of death in Mobile County — claiming more lives than cancer and chronic respiratory diseases combined. Heart disease and stroke cause nearly one in three deaths in Mobile County today, yet national estimates suggest that up to 80 percent of heart disease and stroke could be prevented by managing risk factors and seeking timely care.

World Heart Day is a reminder that small changes can make a life-saving difference. Whether you’re caring for yourself or helping someone else, there are practical ways everyone in Mobile County can protect their heart and support others.

Know Your Numbers

Understanding your personal health metrics is one of the most powerful tools for prevention. Residents are encouraged to regularly check:

  • Blood pressure
  • Cholesterol levels
  • Blood sugar

Screenings are often available through local clinics, pharmacies, and community health events.

Learn CPR — Be Ready to Save a Life

Cardiac emergencies can happen anywhere, at any time. Learning CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival during cardiac arrest.

  • Look for CPR training classes offered by local hospitals, the American Red Cross, or community centers
  • Encourage workplaces, schools, and churches to host training sessions

Know the Warning Signs

Quick action can save lives. If someone is experiencing chest pain or difficulty breathing, it’s critical to respond immediately.

Signs of a possible heart attack include:

  • Chest discomfort or pressure
  • Pain in the arm, neck, jaw, or back
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea, lightheadedness, or cold sweats

What to do:

  1. Call 911 immediately.
  2. Keep the person calm and seated.
  3. Loosen tight clothing.
  4. If trained, begin CPR if the person becomes unresponsive.  If a person is not responding and an AED is available, send someone to get it right away and follow the device instructions while CPR is being performed if needed.

Take Heart-Healthy Steps Every Day

Preventing heart disease starts with daily habits:

  • Stay physically active (at least 30 minutes most days)
  • Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
  • Avoid tobacco and limit alcohol
  • Manage stress and get adequate sleep

Join the Movement in Mobile County

World Heart Day is more than a date — it’s a call to action. Local organizations, schools, and community groups are encouraged to host events, share resources, and support heart health education throughout the county.
