Mobile County resident’s listeriosis case highlights importance of food safety

MOBILE, Ala. — The Mobile County Health Department is reminding residents that foodborne illnesses are real and can have serious consequences. A reported case of listeriosis in a Mobile County resident serves as an important reminder that awareness of food recalls, safe food handling, and proper cooking practices all play a critical role in protecting individual and family health.

This is the first human case reported in Mobile County this year. Because of patient privacy rights under the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), no additional identifying information will be made available.

Listeriosis is a bacterial infection that can be spread through contaminated food. While anyone can become ill, the infection can be especially serious for older adults, pregnant women, newborns, and people with weakened immune systems.

Health officials encourage residents to stay alert to food recall notices issued by manufacturers and retailers. Consumers should also take everyday precautions at home, including washing hands and food preparation surfaces, separating raw foods from ready-to-eat items, cooking foods to appropriate temperatures, and refrigerating perishable foods promptly.

The Mobile County Health Department also reminds the community that its restaurant inspectors work every day to inspect restaurants and other eating establishments to help ensure minimum sanitation standards are maintained. These inspections are an important part of a broader effort to reduce the risk of foodborne illness and promote a safer dining environment throughout Mobile County.

“Food safety starts with awareness and action,” said Dr. Kevin Michaels, Mobile County Health Officer.  “By paying attention to recalls and practicing safe food handling at home, residents can help reduce the risk of serious illness for themselves and their loved ones.”

Residents are encouraged to use trusted sources for food recall information and to take food safety precautions seriously in their homes and when dining out.
