Mobile recognizes Community Health Workers Week

MOBILE, Ala. — National Community Health Workers Awareness Week is being recognized from August 25 to 29. The theme for 2025 is “Celebrating who we are, commemorating our achievements, & collaborating with equity.”

On Wednesday, members of the Mobile County Health Department (MCHD) received a proclamation from the Mobile City Council and Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson in recognition of the week.
Tokie Dunn, Director of Community Prevention Programs at MCHD, spoke after the presentation. This was her message to the City Council and Mayor:

“Community Prevention Programs is housed under the Bureau of Community & Nutrition Services headed by Ms. Pebbles King, nestled under the Prevention & Wellness directorate headed by Dr. Stephanie-Woods Crawford, all under the leadership of our Mobile County Health Officer, Dr. Kevin Michaels.

“It is indeed an honor to be here along with many other Community Health Workers to receive this proclamation in recognition of the 3rd Annual National Community Health Workers Awareness Week! This week we celebrate!

“Community Health Workers are vital to our communities! We are a resilient workforce dedicated to empowering, educating, and encouraging individuals and families to have better health outcomes, make better choices, and experience a better life overall. We address the social determinants of health that are driving forces in increased health disparities all while helping community members navigate complex health and social systems. We are the cape-less heroes!

“In the past three years, Community Health Workers in Mobile County have helped reach over 12,000 individuals with messaging and educational sessions and referred over 1,700 individuals with chronic and acute medical conditions to needed health and social services.

“Today we honor the work of CHWs in our neighborhoods, communities, county & state!

“To the many who support the work that we do, Thank You!

“To the many CHWs who are brave enough to care, Happy 3rd Annual National Community Health Worker Awareness Week!”

According to the American Public Health Association, a Community Health Worker (CHW) is a frontline public health worker who is a trusted member of and/or has an unusually close understanding of the community served. This trusting relationship enables the worker to serve as a liaison/link/intermediary between health/social services and the community to facilitate access to services and improve the quality and cultural competence of service delivery.
