National HIV Testing Day is June 27: Check your status

MOBILE, Ala. — National HIV Testing Day has been observed annually on June 27 since 1995. This is a day to encourage people to get tested for HIV, know their status, and get linked to care and treatment. Knowing your HIV status helps you choose options to stay healthy.

“Testing is the only way to know if you have HIV,” said Dr. Kevin Michaels, Health Officer for Mobile County. “When people learn their status, we can immediately connect them to care and treatment that helps them live long, healthy lives and reduces the spread of HIV in our community.”

The Mobile County Health Department’s Ryan White Program is encouraging community members to get tested for HIV during activities scheduled for Friday and Saturday. This year’s theme — “55 Tests for 55 Years: Continuing Ryan White’s Legacy” — commemorates what would have been Ryan White’s 55th birthday and honors his enduring impact on HIV awareness, education, and care.

White became a national advocate for people living with HIV/AIDS after facing discrimination because of his diagnosis as a teenager. His courage and determination helped change public perceptions of HIV and led to improved access to care for thousands of Americans. The Ryan White Program continues to carry forward that legacy by promoting HIV testing, treatment, and prevention services.

This year’s testing event will take place at the Waterfront Rescue Mission (279 North Washington Street in Mobile). Participants who take a rapid HIV test will receive a survival self-care kit while supplies last. In addition, patients attending routine medical appointments at the Keeler location are encouraged to participate in HIV testing activities. Anyone who receives either a rapid or traditional HIV test will receive a summer hygiene kit while supplies last.

MCHD’s Sexually Transmitted Infection team will also be out Saturday at the Karing Kastle health fair to conduct testing.

The Mobile County Health Department encourages all community members to take advantage of this opportunity to learn their HIV status, support prevention efforts, and help continue Ryan White’s legacy of awareness, compassion, and access to care.
