Prichard reports on Sanitary Sewer Overflows
MOBILE, Ala. — Prichard Water Works & Sewer Board is reporting on multiple Sanitary Sewer Overflows (SSO) that took place between June 2 and June 3. Heavy rains were the cause of the SSO’s.
The nearest manhole locations, estimated overflow, and receiving waters are listed below:
| Location | Estimated Gallons | Receiving Water |
| 198 Wood St. | 43,100 | Chickasaw Creek |
| 728 W. Highland Ave. | 21,700 | Toulmins Spring Branch |
| N. Bessemer Ct. & Whistler St. | 3,700 | Gum Tree Branch |
| 218 Patricia St. | 56,850 | Gum Tree Branch |
| 2407 Whistler St. | 37,900 | Gum Tree Branch |
| 933 Semler St. | 21,550 | Three Mile Creek |
A SSO happens when untreated or partially treated sewage leaves the sanitary sewer system before reaching a wastewater treatment plant, such as from a manhole, broken pipe, pump station, or building cleanout. Sewage can contain bacteria, viruses, and parasites that cause diarrhea, vomiting, skin infections, and other illnesses.
Dr. Kevin Michaels, Health Officer for Mobile County, reminds residents to avoid contact with affected water, soil, and any obvious sewage, keep children and pets away from ditches, creeks, flooded areas, and standing water that may be contaminated, and not to swim, wade, or fish in posted areas or in water that looks or smells contaminated.
Most importantly if you have contact with possibly contaminated water or soil, wash skin and clothing thoroughly with soap and clean water as soon as possible.
