Respiratory illness trends: Preventive steps for a healthy holiday season

MOBILE, Ala. — Dr. Kevin Michaels, Health Officer for Mobile County, reports that this fall’s respiratory illness numbers are closely mirroring patterns seen in previous years.

The colder months have historically brought an uptick in respiratory infections, including influenza, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) — the “big three” that pose a particular concern for families and vulnerable populations. However, they are not the only respiratory viruses circulating in the community.

“We want everyone to enjoy a safe and healthy holiday season,” Dr. Michaels said. “The good news is that we now have three great immunizations available to help protect our community: updated flu shots, new COVID-19 vaccines, and the recently approved RSV immunization. We also can’t forget about the Pneumonia shot (pneumococcal vaccination).”

Dr. Michaels strongly encourages everyone to speak with their healthcare provider to discuss which vaccines are best for their age, risk factors, and family situation.

In addition to vaccination, simple public health habits remain crucial:

  • Wash hands regularly, especially after being in public spaces or caring for someone ill.
  • Practice cough etiquette by covering your mouth and nose with your elbow or a tissue.
  • If you feel sick, stay away from others to help reduce the spread of illness.

“The combination of vaccines and good hygiene is our ticket to overcoming seasonal illnesses and keeping our neighbors safe,” Dr. Michaels added. “Let’s work together to protect one another and have a wonderful, healthy holiday season!”
